UPDATE: 22-Dec-2023 Vessel was reported to have leaked around 20 tons of diesel fuel, which covered 300 metres of the shorelike of Jibei Island. Oil containment booms could not be deployed due to rough seas and high winds. The Ocean Conservation Administration, along with the Taiwan Coast Guard are working to contain the spill.
Cargo vessel ran aground north of the Baisha Township, near Jibei after suffering power loss due to mechanical fault. She was en route from Taichung to Kaohsiung and lost power soon after leaving the port. All crew members were rescued by a National Airborne Service Corps helicopter after the captain gave the order to abandon ship.
